Pearls
- Start with Instagram. Instagram is by far the fastest-growing social media platform, with a 420% increase in the number of programs with accounts from 2017 to 2020. If your program doesn’t have a social media presence yet, the best place to start is Instagram.
- Use social media to give tours. Many applicants turn to social media to find information about residency programs. With only 8 programs running a YouTube channel specific to ophthalmology residencies in 2020, having video tours of your facilities can put you a step ahead of the competition.
- Use social media for education. Many medical students rely on social media for information related to their field of interest. Utilize this to increase your program’s social media engagement by posting weekly quiz questions, lectures, or business tips.
